coup de foudre

I've settled back into my routine...finally, completely readjusted back to my reality. Sleep. That's all I need to recover, always.

It's raining right now. As long as it's not sideways rain i can embrace the nasty weather. All I need are my thigh highs, burberry trench and my driving gloves! The year is almost ending. Naturally, I look back at the path of destruction i've left behind me. I have to say, Fall/Winter 2009 was probably one of the best I've had in years, if not ever. I'm sad to see it go. The past few months have been a whirlwind of misadventures and misexcitement. I've never had more fun being single. I think the only thing I miss about having a boyfriend is sleeping next to him. Looking forward, i'm hopeful and anxious and at the same time, i toss it all to fate. Who are the new faces i'll meet? Where will i go? and Love? ahhhh, love. (or arghhh, love.) the only way it'll work is if there's electricity it's electroshocktherapy from the start.

"She and Johnny Depp met four years before they got together but they have both described it as a coup de foudre (love at first sight). Depp has said, "the moment I set eyes on her, I fell." For her part, she has said that she shook hands with someone in the dark, didn't even know it was him, but felt a tingle in her fingers, her arm, her whole body."

To me, simple and elegant equals something the parents love. but don't you think the slicked back hair, natural makeup, and the classic black dress gets so monotonous and feels uninspired? you just kinda start... blending in with the background. like that Scream painting. vanessa paradis is an example of a gypsy queen. she carries a touch of both worlds. and speaking of johnny depp, aren't we all psyched about Alice in Wonderland? Here's the latest trailer. You should let it load first!!!

Stream of Consciousness of a gal who's crashing and burning in bed

I don't think elderly people are cute. Nor babies. Except my bff's baby.

Does that make me evil?

I think Sandra Lee looks scary. I'm too worn and torn to be fully scared but i'm like... hazily dismissive of her right now as i blink at her on tv from under my pillow.

Why is it so cold in Georgia in December?

Why does it seem like stuff i write on here foreshadows things i experience in real life? Weird.

The Kills - Cheap and Cheerful. Yesh, i feel this right now.

Leave it to Kate Moss to snag a painfully hip guitarist like Jamie Hince. Their union is definitely death and glitter. And only druggies can wear skinny jeans because they're the only ones who can physically develop that distinctive, protein-less skinniness required for those sexpants. You know what i'm talking about, don't you?

I'm bored of cheap and cheerful
I want expensive sadness
Hospital bills, parole
Open doors to madness

I want you to be crazy
'Cause you're boring baby when you're straight
I want you to be crazy
'Cause you're stupid baby when you're sane

I'm sick of social graces
Show your shark-tipped teeth
Lose your cool in public
Dig that legal meet

'Cause love is just a dialogue
You can't survive on ice-cream
You got the same needs as a dog

It's alright (it's alright)
To be mean (to be mean)
It's alright (it's alright)
To be mean (to be mean)

I want you to be crazy
'Cause you're boring baby when you're straight
I want you to be crazy
'Cause you're stupid baby when you're sane

TATTOOS

Out of all the celeb tattoodles i see today, i heart Evan Rachel Wood's thigh tattoo the most. In fact, i want to get my next one on my left upper thigh like this. So pinup babydoll flashy, yet it's very hidden so you can still be both a prim'Nproper lady when need be, and revert back to a wildchild when you feel like wearing daisydukes or belly tees; this was my chief and decisive stipulation when i got my hip/stomach tattoodle and my wrist tattoodle (you can hide it with a nice watch). however, i did forget that i will probably get pregnant in the future and it will stretch) but i will leave that worrying for najoongnajoong [laaaaterlater] when i get preggomyleggo'd and we shall discuss that then.

Here is the singular, indomitable Evan... the freaks'n geeks dream come true. I know she's been dubbed "the poor man's Dita von Teese," and she's dating frickin Marilyn Douchebag Manson, but man, she's a brilliant actress -- did you see The Wrestler? Dang, she really hates her dad! -- with superunique style. And it's not like she does peepshows or champagne glass performances like Dita. She's a movie star; and there's plenty of room in Hollywoodland for burlesque/pinupy fashionsense. I happen to adore it and it's lacking ...except maybe on the set of Mad Men.

PS. IS SHE NOT BRILLIANT AS QUEEN SOPHIE-ANNE LECLERQ on True Blood? Salacious.

Kamunyak: The Blessed Lioness among African Lions

I just finished watching Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom: Heart of a Lioness on Animal Planet. I think my heart is broken. I've never cried so much during an animal special!!!!

Basically, a lioness defies nature and logic and adopts a baby oryx (kind of like an antelope). She sees the calf as her cub and over the year discriminates between her oryx calf and all other antelope species. While she would kill other antelope, for her, the oryx calf was her cub. Here, i'm just going to let the discovery website do the explaining while i tissue up.
On this Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom special, an inversion of nature baffles the scientific world when a young lioness in Samburu Reserve, Kenya, sets aside her predatory instincts to adopt a baby oryx antelope. She mothers it with infinite tenderness for 16 days, foregoing her most basic needs and proving to be both a compassionate and wise protector. Wildlife expert Saba Douglas-Hamilton sets out to explain this intriguing mystery. What complex motivation has stirred the heart of this lioness? The local Samburu people — who've named the lioness Kamunyak, which means "the blessed one" — have never witnessed anything like this before, and experts are also baffled by Kamunyak's motives. When Saba encounters the pair, it is clear that they are in a bad way. The young lioness is unable to nurse the oryx calf, and it is weak and thin. Kamunyak refuses to leave her young charge, so she's not feeding herself and is woefully undernourished. In an effort to help the park warden throws her a chunk of meat but Kamunyak refuses to eat it. As the days go on she becomes less and less able to protect herself or the oryx from other lions. Will this precarious bond last, or will it end in tragedy?
Well it ends in tragedy when Kamunyak turns away for just a frickin moment and suddenly a male lion that had been hiding in the shrub pounces and kills the calf. The calf's desperate cries are horrible and Kamunyak seems beside herself, unable to do anything about it because the male could just as easily rip her to shreds. As her calf is dragged away bleating, she moves to the spot where the calf was killed and smells the blood, the way that a lioness would if she had lost her own cub. And then she disappears, never to be seen again.

I found it so interesting and heartwarming how the Samburu people explained, "Kamunyak was barren, so God gave her the gift of child." Omg, waterworks are starting again. I'm going to go die now.

Did you know that there are instances of humans being adopted by animals? When asked if there have been any other documented cases of lionesses or big cats adopted a prey species, wildlife expert Douglas-Hamilton says:
Nothing that I know of. However, when we did our research we came across a book called Wild Boys and Savage Girls about human children that had been adopted by animals. The most interesting story was about two young girls who were adopted by the same pack of wolves in India on different occasions, I think with an eight year gap between them. There was also a young boy in Russia who was taken in by a pack of feral dogs on the streets of Moscow, and a young child in Uganda adopted by a troop of vervet monkeys. In legend, there is the story of Romulus and Remus who founded Rome and were raised by a pack of wolves. And of course Daniel and the lion's den. When it is humans we pay attention, but it is only recently that we have the knowledge of animal behavior that we are able to investigate some of the instances in the natural world between different species.
Fascinating. I think i'm going to have to do some research on this book and the young girls in India with the wolves and the boy in Russia with the wild dogs. Anomalies of nature are absolutely compelling to me!
"Even today, three years down the line, Kamunyak is seen as a symbol of peace. Shortly before our last election, politicians stood up in Parliament and said, 'If traditional enemies like the lion and the oryx can be friends, so we too can work together'." - Saba Douglas-Hamilton

NAILS

Like any gal, i collect nail polish. A girl's hands are a huge, huge focal point and as my mother likes to say, "you can tell a lot about a person by their fingernails." In other words if your nails are chipped or too long, you might need to be maintaining yourself a little better - perhaps not even just physically. If you have perfectly lacquered nails, you're probably very on top of things, a perfectionist, or just vain with a lot of time on your hands. Lol! For me, it's to the point where any time i walk into the grocery store, i have to pick up a new shade or a variation of a red or a pink or a funkyhue that i don't think i have. This sickness has resulted in 305293 shades of the same hot pink; not funny. Wasteful. Here are my favorites right now.

Maybelline's Pot of Gold - you can't it buy anymore because it's Limited Edition. (well, maybe online somewhere if you advance search). It's the greatest glitter nail polish i have ever owned, and i have tried every glitter shade out there. The unique aspect is the large sequins of gold that are scattered throughout the actual polish that is sprinkled with tiny glitter. The effect?--even one coat produces an amazingly dramatic effect--it's like wearing a sequined dress, but on your nails. Also, it results in a smooth finish. You know how most glitter nail polishes feel sandy or grainy on your nails? This one feels as smooth as topcoat even with the large sequins. I'm telling you, it's omazing. Below is one coat, i repeat, ONE COAT of Pot of Gold. I usually put on 2-3 coats so you can imagine how much crazier it comes out... i mean my hands wind up looking like disco balls. Awesomesauce!

Deborah Lippmann's Happy Birthday, Marquee Moon, and Red Ruby Slippers. They are sequined and glamorous. I LOVE SEQUINS in nail lacquers. How can you go back to a matte finish after being besequined?

And finally, i really like Zoya lacquers. Now, these don't have sequins... just regular glitter. However, the flirty bright hues is what i adore about them. These can pass for being sequinless. Below are Luna (silver ultra glitter), Nova (pink/fuschia ultra glitter), and Astra (pink ultra glitter).

Check out this adorable yellow-green glittery shade! Fittingly, it's called "Sweet Pea" by Hard Candy and it's one of my sister's favorites. *rolling eyes* It's very unique-looking, no? Nails should always be attention-grabbing whether because of their perfectly-groomedness a la french tips or by color; clearly in this case it's the color!

And finally, here is my solutions for a NON-matte finish. This is especially for those times when you have a favorite shade that comes sans glitter/sequins and you want it to pop more. It's called top coat! These two are by Hard Candy as well. "Hot Pants" and "Sugar Daddy" shown over plain black nail polish. See how it enhances the color? I love that! Ahh, the little joys in life.

SHOES

These days, i've been obsessed with shoes. But not just any ol' shoes. CHEAP SHOES. Cheap--yet SUPER KAWAII (that's cute, for you non-japanese!) ^^V

I think my sister has a more sophisticated taste in shoes and clothes than I have. I love cheap things. Of course like any gal, i luuuv the finer things in life, but there's something about snatching up cute bargain steals that gives me a mondo sugar rush. And plus, i can purchase in bulk!

Here are a few of my ladyloves.

Yes! COLOR! When it comes to shoes, for some reason i'm obsessed with color. If it's between black and neon green, it's neon green for me. Some might say it looks summery, but you can throw black stockings on and the shoes stand out like an outfit point even more. Shoes don't always have to match the outfit. I think it looks better when they dont. Wouldn't you agree? I dunno... something about the way the almond toe of a hot pink shoe pops from under your jeans. It's tres kitschy. Who doesn't love kitsch? No more black heels, my pretties! Go color all the way! And even better, go color PLUS platform!

Some bargain shoe shopping tips:
  1. Always read the heel height and the platform height. Hidden platform usually indicates 1" platform. (Heel height - platform height = true heel height). And just so you know, anything below 4" true heel height is trash. No good. 3.5" heel is ugly. Just saying. Follow this equation because 4" arches your feet to maximize leg length. It's an optical illusion: the more your feet arch onto your toes, the longer your legs appear.
  2. Please. No more gladiator anything. Gladiator is so puke now.
  3. Read the material. Patent tends to look cheap when it comes to bargain shoes, especially patent peeptoe pumps. Opt for faux suede instead. =D
  4. Chunky heels / platform heels > stiletto heels.
I think we've all seen the Alexander McQueen Spring 2010 Armadillo Shoes by now. They are the most bizarro things i have ever seen. They're like a cross between an animal and Chinese foot binding. I can't wrap my mind around them... they sorta freak me out. Lady Gaga was the first celebrity to get her hands on them and you probably saw her sport them in the Bad Romance video. I know it's totally cliche to say this, but she's so fierce it kills me.
